Leonard Long and Buddy Darby (KDP) have won an appeal with the SC Administrative Law Court to increase the length of the bulkhead/revetment, along the banks of the Kiawah River, from the 270 feet, which DHEC approved, to approximately 2,750 feet (more than 1/2 mile). Friends of the Kiawah River is partnered with the Coastal Conservation League and the SC Environmental Law Project (SCELP) in objecting, not only to the increased length, but to the original 270 feet. KDP hired two of the most powerful lawyers in South Carolina to argue their case. Our experienced environmental lawyers engaged the best expert witnesses and argued against this potentially damaging revetment. We need to raise at least $60,000 to pay their costs, which will continue to accrue as we appeal the judge's decision to allow the full bulkhead/revetment in spite of the DHEC recommendation and the DHEC Board rejection of a similar sheet pile bulkhead that was to be driven into the sand at the narrow part of the Spit. The SC Supreme Court agreed to take our case, and we have presented it. The decision has been handed down but, we must pay our debts so that we can continue to fend off the attacks on this wildlife-critical piece of South Carolina.

SCELP has established a separate account for Friends of the Kiawah River contributions, which are entirely tax deductible. Please use the link below to make your contribution and add the words Kiawah River in the box provided. We thank you for your generous contribution.
